Draba dorneri Heuffel

Flora Europaea

narrow endemic of Retezat Mountains, subalpine rocky siliciphile element, living on granodiorites

perennial, Ch, 2n= 32, tetraploid (in Draba fladnitzensis Wulfen, 2n= 16, diploid).

Silenion lerchenfeldianae

A very vulnerable narrow endemic species of Retezat Mountains with a single small population. It is closely related to the widespread Circumpolar arctic-alpine Draba fladnitzensis Wulfen. The main characters of this species are the length of the style (0.5-0.75 mm, in Draba fladnitzensis up to 0.5 mm), and the hairs on the leaves (simple and all long in Draba faldnitzensis, mainly bifurcate and short (except to the base of the leaf) in Draba dorneri.

For an iconography of Draba fladnitzensis Wulfen see here.

The genetic structure of the unique population was investigated in 2013 by three Romanian researchers, see here. They found quite a high level of genetic diversity for such a small relic population.

An interesting PhD thesis from Germany regarding the genetics and phylogeny of Draba can be found here.

In Sarbu, I., Stefan, N., Oprea, A. (2013) - Plante vasculare din Romania. Determinator ilustrat de teren. Ed.Victor B Victor, Bucuresti p. 302 the plant is said to be present also in Bucegi and Fagaras Mountains a lot more to the east in the Meridional Carpathians.

Images from the unique population of this narrow endemic, taken on ridge which climbs from Valereasca Glade to Retezat peak, 1850 m asl, July 2011.
